Quick answer: dried bitter melon (Momordica charantia) is naturally bitter. If the cup is too intense, use less dried material, shorten the steep, or dilute the finished infusion. Stronger bitterness is not proof of a stronger health effect.

Kew accepts Momordica charantia as the botanical species used as food in multiple regions. Kew POWO: Momordica charantia.

Change one brewing variable at a time so you can tell what actually made the cup milder.

How to make a gentler cup

Start with the directions for the exact product. On the next cup, change only one variable: reduce the dried slices, shorten the steep, or add more water. Serving the tea chilled changes perception but does not remove the plant’s bitter constituents.

Why medical claims need restraint

NCCIH says research on herbal supplements studied for diabetes, including bitter melon, is limited in number, size, and quality and has not proven effectiveness. A review indexed in PubMed similarly concluded that evidence was insufficient for routine recommendation and noted possible additive effects with glucose-lowering agents. NCCIH: Diabetes and Dietary Supplements; PubMed review: bitter melon efficacy and safety.

If you take glucose-lowering medicine

Discuss regular or concentrated bitter-melon use with the clinician managing your medication. This article is about beverage preparation, not a diabetes treatment plan.
